I'm very much a feel writer myself, Dave. I like to visualize the ending, then sort of let the prose shape itself. This usually done through the characters. They often just take off. It's great fun to see where it goes.

That's a great technique and I hope you're able to use it consistently. However, some writers get to points and don't know where to go next. That's where I find planning to be helpful.
